2023 Week 3 NFL Injury Recap

This article will recap all fantasy-relevant injuries from the previous weekend. Remember, we are operating with limited information, and as the week progresses, situations will become clearer.

Mike Williams - ACL

Williams will likely have surgery in the next 2-3 weeks. He should be ready to roll by 2024, barring a major complication.

Derek Carr - AC Joint Sprain (Shoulder)

Carr was sent to the hospital to clear internal organ injuries. Ultimately he was diagnosed with an AC sprain. On average, QBs miss 17 days (essentially 2.5 weeks) with this injury — plan to be without Carr for at least that long for now. Jameis Winston is worth a look for SF and 2 QB leagues.

Jimmy Garoppolo - Concussion

Garoppolo is in the concussion protocol for the first time in his career. The sample of fantasy-relevant QBs to sustain concussions since 2018 is small, but 50% don’t miss any time at all. Watch his practice status closely this week. There are no moves to make as of today.

Deebo Samuel - Ribs

Samuel “avoided fractured ribs” and is just sore. He’s not likely to miss time as of today but watch his status closely. He definitely won’t be 100% despite the mini-bye. There’s no associated transaction as of today.

Gus Edwards - Concussion

Edwards sustained the first documented concussion of his career. 50% of the time RBs since 2018 have missed no time at all. Follow his practice participation all week. Justice Hill, who is coming off a toe injury himself, may give it a go if Edwards can’t — since 2018, RBs have missed an average of 1-2 games with toe injuries.

Rashod Bateman - Hamstring

Bateman came up limp and said he has a hamstring issue. He called it tightness but the Ravens tend to be conservative and he may hold him back.

Brandon Aiyuk - AC Sprain

The Niners decided their Week 3 matchup wasn’t worth bringing Aiyuk back from a painful AC sprain, which was the right move. He’ll likely return in Week 4 with a minimal-moderate concern for reinjury.

Updates

Anthony Richardson - Concussion

Will likely make his return in Week 4, barring a setback.

Saquon Barkley - Ankle

Barkley admitted to a high ankle sprain. Week 5 is the soonest he could reasonably return without significant deficits.

David Montgomery - Thigh Bruise

He’s not likely to play in Week 4, given the quick Thursday night turnaround.

Jaylen Waddle - Concussion

Waddle has a very good chance to go in Week 4, barring a setback.
