Commanders Trends
Record: 1-0 (1-0)
Jayden Daniels accounted for just 1 TD in the season opener, but he still turned 20.1 FP thanks to 11/68 rushing in a victory over the Giants. He’s reached 19.9+ FP 13 times in his first 18 games, and he left early in two games last season. He’s also reached 60+ rushing yards seven times. The Packers allowed 5.8 YPA, 225/1 passing, and 11.9 FP to Jared Goff last week. Green Bay allowed the third-fewest FPG (15.0) and the ninth-fewest rushing YPG (15.8) to QBs last season.
Terry McLaurin took a backseat in Washington’s passing game in the season opener, which came after a lengthy holdout during training camp. He mustered just 2/27 receiving on 4 targets against the Giants, but he at least led the Commanders in route share at 84%). He also got off to a slow start last season, posting 8/39 receiving in his first two games. Green Bay deployed Cover 3 or Cover 2 74.4% of the time last week, and McLaurin averaged 2.91 YPRR and .23 TPRR on 202 routes against those coverages last season. The Packers limited Jameson Williams to 4/23 receiving on 5 targets last week.
Deebo Samuel propelled Washington’s offense against the Giants, turning in 7/77 receiving on a team-high 10 targets (33.3%) and scoring on a 19-yard carry for 22.6 FPG to finish as a top-12 WR in Week 1. Green Bay deployed Cover 3 or Cover 2 74.4% of the time last week, and Deebo averaged 1.80 YPRR and .20 TPRR on 171 routes against those coverages last season. He ran 76% of his routes from the slot last week, and the Packers limited Amon-Ra St. Brown to 4/45 receiving last week.
Zach Ertz scored 6 TDs in his last seven regular-season games last season, and he found paydirt in the first game of 2025. He finished with 3/26/1 receiving on 5 targets (16.7%) and a 70.3% route share. Green Bay deployed Cover 3 or Cover 2 74.4% of the time last week, and Ertz averaged 1.74 YPRR and .19 TPRR on 172 routes against those coverages last season. The Packers allowed the eighth-most receiving YPG (57.1) and the 14th-most FPG (9.9) to TEs last season, and Sam LaPorta posted 6/79 receiving against them in the opener.
The Commanders surprisingly made Chris Rodriguez a healthy scratch, which paved the way for a big role for rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt. He didn’t disappoint in his pro debut, totaling 10/82/1 rushing without a reception against the Giants. Austin Ekeler saw the most work in the backfield with 6/26 rushing and 3/31 receiving for 8.7 FP. Ekeler paced JCM in snap share (48%>29%) and route share (46%>14%), while JCM led Ekeler in carry share (31%>19%). Green Bay allowed the eighth-fewest adjusted YBC/ATT (.85) and 2.2 YPC to Detroit’s RBs last week. The Packers conceded a league-high 14 receptions but for just 3.5 YPR.
Packers Trends
- Record: 1-0 (1-0)
- Jordan Love attempted just 22 passes in the season opener, with the Packers dominating the Lions. He completed 16 attempts for 188 yards (8.5 YPA) and TDs, adding 3/4 rushing for 15.9 FP. Love has attempted 30 or fewer passes in nine straight regular-season contests. The Commanders limited Russell Wilson to 168 scoreless yards last week after allowing the third-fewest passing YPG (204.2) to QBs last season. They also pressured Wilson on 46.7% of his dropbacks, and Love’s offensive line comes into this week a bit banged up.
- Romeo Doubs is once again leading an annoying WR rotation from HC Matt LaFleur. Doubs led Packers WRs in receiving yards (68) and route share (65%) in a season-opening victory over the Lions, but he did it on just 2 receptions and 4 targets (18.2%). Matthew Golden managed just 16 yards in his pro debut, catching his only 2 targets. He finished fourth in WR route share at 44%, coming in behind Dontayvion Wicks (48%). The Commanders deployed the eighth-highest rate of man coverage (35.6%) last week after ranking sixth in man rate last season. Doubs averaged 2.01 YPRR and .22 TPRR on 97 routes against man last season. Malik Nabers posted 5/71 receiving in this matchup last week.
- Jayden Reed played well in his first game, playing through a Jones fracture, which had him questionable for the season opener. He turned 3/45/1 receiving on a team-best 5 targets (22.7%), and he finished behind only Doubs in route share at 52%. The Commanders deployed the eighth-highest rate of man coverage (35.6%) last week after ranking sixth in man rate last season. Reed averaged 1.01 YPRR and .20 TPRR on 108 routes against man last season. Wan’Dale Robinson posted 6/55 receiving on 8 targets in this matchup last week.
- Tucker Kraft led the Packers with a 74% route share, well ahead of fellow TEs John FitzPatrick (26%) and Luke Musgrave (9%). He failed to reach double-digit FP despite scoring a touchdown, finishing with 2/16/1 receiving on 4 targets (18%). The Commanders deployed the eighth-highest rate of man coverage (35.6%) last week after ranking sixth in man rate last season. Kraft averaged 1.29 YPRR and .12 TPRR on 99 routes against man last season. The Commanders weren’t tested by Theo Johnson (5-yard reception) last week, and they allowed the fifth-fewest receiving YPG (39.9) to TEs last season.
- Josh Jacobs bludgeoned the Lions for 19/66/1 rushing and a 4-yard catch for 14 FP while handling 85% of the snaps. He’s scored TDs in 11 of his last 12 games (postseason included) and 16 total rushing TDs in that span. The Commanders wiped out the Giants' rushing attack last week, limiting them to -.13 adjusted YBC/ATT and a league-low 15/30 rushing to RBs. They previously allowed the most adjusted YBC/ATT (2.61), the fourth-most rushing YPG (113.8), and the fewest receptions per game (2.8) to RBs last season.
