Pro Football Focus (PFF)
Grade: A-
Founded in 2006, Pro Football Focus (more commonly known as PFF) has been at the forefront of data charting and collecting for both the NFL and NCAA.
Their full team combs through each NFL and collegiate game in order to build out a robust set of offensive and defensive data points, including their own grading system on a scale of 0 to 100 for several measures (including PFF Passing Grade, etc.).
There aren’t many companies that can offer what PFF offers. But if there is a downside, it’s that they offer limited data options with no customizable filer and split options. Any users looking for fantasy-specific information will have to either go elsewhere or do a lot of math by themselves to determine certain metrics.
Plus, the cost of a PFF subscription can be quite prohibitive, and it only covers “real-life football” data, not as many offerings in the fantasy realm.
PFF is an excellent but more limited option for football nerds, lacking specific, frequently sought-after information for fantasy football managers.
Pro Football Reference (PFR)
Grade: B+
Pro Football Reference is a quality site for finding both modern NFL and historical data. Its database goes back to 1920 and incorporates full box scores, game logs, and information about every NFL game.
In addition to the plethora of free information, PFR offers a paid product called Stathead that enables users to query and sort data within very specific parameters, such as years, game situations, and field location.
However, the biggest downside to PFR is that it’s not particularly easy to navigate clearly. Users must be comfortable with page-hopping or opening multiple tabs on a browser to consume information. Also, the pages are populated with several ads, which can be distracting for some people.
